Musical Composition Project

Part 1: Demonstrate understanding and use of Noteflight Notation software

For this part of the assignment, student will watch tutorial videos on how to input notes in to Noteflight as well as add, change and adjust various components of the musical notation software.

First you'll need to create a user name and password and register for a free Noteflight account by clicking here.
Watch the following video tutorials to learn how to use Noteflight:

The videos below will give you a brief introduction to using Noteflight, but the user guide found here is a much more comprehensive source.

To Complete this portion of the project you need to replicate the score handed to you by the substitute. Print your copy and give to the sub.

Part 2: Choose either option below
  1. Compose and original composition for percussion ensemble, using at least 3 different instruments (NOTE: you'll have to use piano as your mallet instruments and the drum set for all drum sound, you can notate in the score if you want the sound to be a different instrument for the performance). There composition should have a varied structure and form that is easy to follow. The composition must be at least 20 measures long. Consider what factors make an piece interesting and pleasing to the audience (think motives, ostinatos, repetitions, dynamics, silence, etc.)
  2. Arrange and piece using an existing melody or popular song for percussion ensemble. The arrangement needs to have at least 3 instruments and be at least 20 measures in length.  You can find many popular songs already arranged using the search function on Noteflight.


If you do not complete the 1st two parts of the assignment you can work on your compositions from home if your have an internet connection. ​
